Associate Professor in Architecture and Design

Biography

Rochus Urban Hinkel is Associate Professor for Architecture and Design at the University of Melbourne since January 2020.

Rochus has taught architecture, interior design and industrial design, previous positions include Professor of Artistic Design at OTH Regensburg, Germany (2016-2020), as well as Professor of Interior Design and Furniture Design at Konstfack University of Arts, Craft and Design, Stockholm (2014-2019). He is a member of the BDA Germany (membership by invitation only) and has been awarded the BDA Preis Bavaria. Projects of his architecture and design practice have been published and exhibited nationally and internationally, including Monument, Wallpaper, Design Report, Ottagono, Bauwelt, Deutsche Bauzeitung, amongst others.

Since 2005 his research and practice concentrates on experimental and artistic explorations and installations focusing on the various environments humans inhabit, interact with and experience. This includes the private and the public realm, the urban and the rural, the analog and the digital.

Rochus has been a curator of the architecture gallery at the Weißenhof in Stuttgart, curated the architecture week A2 in Bamberg, Bavaria, served as a member on the Board of Swedish Architects in Stockholm, and is since 2019 member of the advisory board for urban design of the city of Passau.

In 2020 his project 'Voices of Country', developed with support by the NExT Lab (MSD), has been selected to be part of one of the world's leading media arts festival Ars Electronica.

Rochus serves as reviewer for numerous international journals and is the editor of ‘Urban Interior’ (Spurbuchverlag, 2011), and 'The Society of Interiors' (AADR, 2016).
