Associate Professor in Architectural Design and Practice

Biography

Dr Janet McGaw is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural Design in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne. She is a qualified architect and has a PhD by Creative Works from the University of Melbourne. Her research work, teaching and creative practice investigate ways to make urban space more equitable. Janet uses methods that are discursive, collaborative and sometimes ephemeral. She has worked with homeless women, researched graffiti art practices and is currently lead CI on an ARC Linkage Grant with Reconciliation Victoria, The Melbourne City Council and the Traditional Owners Land Justice Group exploring Indigenous placemaking in Melbourne.

Janet has coordinated the first architectural design studio in the Bachelor of Environments programme, Architecture Design Studio: Earth, and a cross disciplinary Design Research methods elective in the Masters degrees offered in the Melbourne School of Design.

Janet is co-author with Anoma Pieris of the forthcoming book Assembling the Centre: Architecture for Indigenous Cultures. Australia and Beyond (2015, Routledge).
