Jefa Greenaway RAIA (Wailwan|Kamilaroi)

Knowledge Broker/Senior Lecturer - Indigenous Curriculum Development


Jefa Greenaway is currently Knowledge Broker | Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne with over two decades experience at the University. Jefa is also a regular design communicator, across podcasts, articles and as regular design commentator on ABC Radio.

Jefa is also director of Greenaway Architects (est. 1998) a holistic design practice undertaking architectural, landscape, interior and urban design projects for private, commercial and educational clients. Melbourne. Jefa’s work in practice include such projects as the Lowitja Institute, the Koorie Heritage Trust, design principles for Aboriginal Housing Victoria and is currently working on the Wilin Centre at the VCA and the New Student Precinct, as part of a Lyons lead consortia team at the University of Melbourne. His project Ngarara Place at RMIT was recently selected to be exhibited at the Australian pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Italy.

He’s championed Indigenous led design thinking for over 25 years as a registered architect in NSW and VIC, including as co-founder of the not-for-profit advocacy group Indigenous Architecture + Design Victoria, as co-author of the International Indigenous Design Charter, and as Regional Ambassador (Oceania) of INDIGO (International Indigenous Design Network). He’s a founding signatory of Architects Declare Australia an initiative foregrounding architecture’s role in to tackling the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, is co-curator (with Tristan Wong) of the Australian exhibition at La Biennale Architettura di Venezia 2020/21 (Venice Biennale) and was recently inducted into the Design Institute of Australia’s 2020 ‘Hall of Fame’.

Jefa sits on numerous boards, and advisory panels including the State Design Review Panels in NSW and VIC, the Public Arts Advisory Panel (City of Melbourne) and design juries for the AIA, PIA and AILA. Jefa is currently a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Oversight Committee (Melb Uni) where he seeks to amplify opportunities to embed Indigenous knowledge systems and design thinking within both academia and is an ambassador for the 2020 Sustainability Awards.
