Nancy Ji

Lecturer in Architectural Design

Biography

Nancy Ji is a designer, architect, and lecturer in Architectural Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne. Her research area includes architecture and urbanism in Japan and the Asia-Pacific, alternative forms of design including community-led and socially engaged practices, and the revitalization of rural and regional areas. Nancy’s research has been presented at international conferences and published in various journals and media. Her design work has been featured by Wallpaper* and received various awards including the Mercedes-Benz Design Award and the Emerging Designer award presented by Craft Victoria.

Born in China, Nancy trained as an architect at the University of Auckland, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Melbourne, and Delft University of Technology. In 2019 Nancy received the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship to undertake doctoral studies at Keio University, Japan. Nancy’s doctoral thesis studied cases of adaptive reuse and renovation in contemporary Japanese Architecture. Prior to joining the University of Melbourne, Nancy has taught at Keio University and was a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland. She has worked as an architect at Bates Smart Architects in Melbourne, and Atelier Bow Wow and Kengo Kuma and Associates in Tokyo. Nancy is a registered architect in the state of Victoria.
