Resources, Waste, Re-cycling, Life-cycles, and Re-use are topics which are explored from industrial production, building construction to craftship and arts. Upcycling is a creative process.
In this re-iteration of Ex_Lab students re-examine everyday objects and materials, whether pre-used, recycled or simply used in different context. Students design artefacts related to a resting human body. Through a process of re-thinking and re-examining materials and their applications students re-envisage new applications related to humans resting on crafted objects. Students explore potential materials and by-products for upcycling in groups and develop two interrelated pieces of furniture in pairs of two.
Through open ended experimentations students develop new interpretations of material usage, leading to new design interpretations. Students need to demonstrate their capability to design and fabricate a piece of furniture that is the outcome of a process of experimentation and research with fabrication techniques and materials.
Students will receive specific training in the operation and potentials of different fabrication equipment within the MSD makerspaces.
