BEL+T sessions investigate key learning and teaching issues with ABP staff. They offer opportunities to connect with others around these challenges, to explore new approaches, and to find out more about what is happening at the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning (ABP), and the Melbourne School of Design.
Teaching for Inclusive Learning
The pilot BEL+T Session took place on Wednesday April 10. The focus was on Teaching for Inclusive Learning and it was terrific to share a focus and ideas with staff who are teaching, and supporting teaching and students, as well as student representatives.
These discussions are directly relevant to the delivery of great teaching within our Faculty, as well as to key initiatives at the University including the Belonging to Melbourne : Enhancing Student Life and Success green paper currently under discussion. The focus of the evening also relates strongly to a number of the themes within Great Teaching @ ABP on the BEL+T site and additional resources and links are included below.
The BEL+T Teaching for Inclusive Learning panel and participants explored issues that can impact student experiences of inclusion, moving beyond ‘deficit models’ in these discussions, and teaching approaches that can build participation and engagement across a cohort.

The Sharing Paradox: Collaboration and Collusion
The BEL+T team has produced a series of resources exploring issues relating to collaboration and collusion in learning and teaching. These resources were used in the second BEL+T session : The Sharing Paradox.
The session centered on eight activities for staff. Participants were given worksheets, challenges and a set of resources to assist.
The activities were:
- Designing Successful Group Projects
- Developing Assessment Tools for Collaborative Projects
- Group Formation Strategies
- Writing a Group Contract
- Supporting Student Groups Working on Collaborative Projects
- Drawing the Line Between Collaboration and Collusion
- Peer Assessment and Adjustment Factors
- Detecting Academic Misconduct

Lunchtime BEL+T Session - Detecting Academic Misconduct
BEL+T’s second teaching and learning session The Sharing Paradox provided staff with practical resources related to a series of classroom dilemmas involving collusion and/or collaboration. This lunchtime BEL+T session will reprise two of the eight activities. It will provide staff with practical guidance on drawing the line between collaboration and collusion and on detecting academic misconduct. BYO lunch and collaborative spirit to share your ideas and experience of this important topic.
April 2020 BEL+T Session
The April 2020 BEL+T Session was dedicated to answering staff questions about teaching and learning in ABP, with a particular focus on issues emerging from the move to a virtual campus. Members of the Faculty and the BEL+T group participated in the online session, responding to staff questions about changes to semester dates and updates, changes to subject delivery and assessment, support for sessional staff, IT and equipment, and support for students. These issues are outlined here.
