Session 3 - Editing

Video editing is an art, and editors spend a lifetime in pursuit of a perfect edit. But you can apply some of the tricks of the trade to your own video productions. In this session, we will show you how to perform the most common editing functions using accessible software options. We will cover basic ‘top and tail’ trim functions in Adobe Rush, how to insert ‘cutaway’ images and videos, and how to export and upload your video to Canvas. Hopefully by the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Choose the right editing solution from a range of basic, intermediate and advanced options
  • Navigate the basic layout of a video editing window
  • Download extra assets from the Brand Hub and Image Bank
  • Setup a project in Adobe Rush
  • Trim a video on the Adobe Rush timeline
  • Create and add a title slide
  • Add common transitions
  • Use the ‘audio tab’ to boost and clean up volume
  • Export and upload your video to Canvas
  • Add / edit closed captions (aka subtitles)

The best editing software is the one you’re most familiar with. They are all capable of executing the basic editing functions, and the video quality of your exported video should be comparable. So you should spend the LEAST time worrying about which software to use and get on with it!

Learning Environments have compiled a table of suitable options:

Regardless of what software you open, here are the things to look out for. A ‘media pool’ in the top-left, a viewer/preview window in the top-right, a timeline along the bottom and a tool palette—including scissors or a razor to trim/cut/split your clips.
