Assessment considerations in moving from closed-book to open-book exams

This guide has been created as part of the Melbourne CSHE Teaching and Learning Short Guide Series.

Chris Deneen, Senior Lecturer in Higher Education Curriculum and Assessment, has created a short guide to assist in moving from in-place, closed-book exams to an open-book, remote assessment format. This guide outlines some of the educational benefits of open-book exam, before offering conceptual considerations, practical tips, and discusses the relative merits of two common approaches to open-book exams: those with strict time limits, and those with broad time limits (‘take-home’ exams).
