Assisting staff to support student mental health

The University of Melbourne Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free, confidential, short-term professional counselling to currently enrolled students and staff.

Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides resources to assist staff to support student mental health. Staff can contact CAPS for a confidential secondary consultation (mental health advice) regarding any student or staff-and-student related mental health concern during business hours.

All staff can access the CAPS 40-minute online training program "Supporting Student Mental Health" to learn how to respond to students with mental health problems and about available services and resources. For those requiring more in-depth training, Mental Health First Aid certificate programs are provided monthly through online delivery. For further information or tailored mental health training requests, see the Services for Staff section of the CAPS website for details. Mental health and wellbeing self-help resources are also available including information on managing feelings of stress, anxiety, or distress associated with COVID-19, and early identification and support of students who may be experiencing mental health issues.
