A CNC Router is a computer numerically-controlled machine where the tool paths are controlled via computer. It can cut and mill various hard materials, such as wood, composites, aluminium, plastics, and foams. The CNC Router uses a 3 Axis rotating bit to remove material from stock in order to shape a part. 3 Axis means that tool can move simultaneously in all three directions; X, Y and Z. This is appropriate for parts that have doubly curved surfaces such as topography and curvilinear forms, or for 2 axis cutting of large materials.

The CNC Router is only operated by trained FabLab technicians.

- Submit your file to the FabLab for processing.
- You will need to have a detailed understanding of the machine to prepare your file. There are numerous tool bits which achieve different functions such as Profiling, Pocketing, Engraving, Hole Pocketing and 3D Surface Milling.
- The CNC is an industrial sized machine and as such is good for large parts and curved precise geometry rather than smaller delicate models.
- The FabLab CNC is 3 axis and is limited in the direction it can cut. A good way to think about the capabilities of the CNC is that the tool can only mill what is seen from the top viewport. Other limitations include the bit length, rounded corners and bit widths. Refer to the CNC Router Guidelines for more information.
