ACAHUCH + AIA 2020 Awards for ‘Heritage’ and 'Advocacy’ Discussion Panel
Join Professor Philip Goad (Co-Director of The Australian Centre of Architectural History, Urban and Cultural Heritage and Melbourne School of Design Chair of Architecture) and Roger Beeston (Chair of the AIA Heritage Architecture panel, Australian Institute of Architects) in discussion with AIA 2020 award winners in the categories of Heritage and Advocacy — Kerstin Thompson, Peter Lovell, Tania Davidge and Peter Malatt. Panellists will discuss their winning projects, the process the AIA takes in adjudicating these awards, and share their thoughts on current issues in heritage, conservation and renewal,. This will be followed by an open discussion and the opportunity for questions from audience members to panellists.
Hosted by ACAHUCH at the Melbourne School of Design, the University of Melbourne, the seminar will feature an inspiring dialogue between panellists, with an opportunity for Q+A at the end with the panellists.
Speakers
Roger Beeston
Roger Beeston is a Registered Architect, founding director of RBA Architects and Conservation Consultants, and an Associate of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) where he has served as a Member and Jury Chair for the AIA Awards. A University of Melbourne alumnus, Roger is also a past recipient of the AIA John George Knight Award for Heritage Architecture on multiple occasions. Through his exposure to international debate on conservation practice via AusHeritage (Australia’s Export Network for Cultural Heritage Services), of which he is Deputy Chair, Roger has also developed a keen grasp of evolving conservation management practice in a broad context, particularly the Asia Pacific region.
Philip Goad
Professor Philip Goad is internationally known for his research and is an authority on modern Australian architecture. Chair of Architecture in the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne, Philip has also worked extensively as an architect, conservation consultant, and curator. He is an expert on the life and work of Robin Boyd, and has held visiting scholar positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Bartlett School of Architecture (London) and UCLA (Los Angeles). Philip is a past editor of Fabrications, the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand, and co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture.
Kerstin Thompson
Kerstin Thompson is Principal of KTA and Adjunct Professor at RMIT and Monash Universities. A committed design educator she regularly lectures and runs studios at various schools across Australia and New Zealand. In recognition for the work of her practice, contribution to the profession and its education, Kerstin was elevated to Life Fellow by the Australian Institute of Architects in 2017. She plays an active role promoting quality design within the profession, and the wider community, through her position as Panel Member on the Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s Design Review Panel and Board Member for Melbourne Housing Expo, a research group led by The University of Melbourne. A passionate defender of civic space and advocate for extracting new life from our built heritage KTA’s redevelopment of the Broadmeadows Town Hall won the 2020 Victorian Architecture Medal.
Peter Lovell
Peter Lovell is founding director of Lovell Chen, one of Australia’s most well-known and well-regarded leaders in design, conservation and management associated with heritage places. An honorary Fellow of the AIA, Peter has previously been a past member of the executive of the Australia ICOMOS, and has been involved with a number of arts and creative industries bodies, and is currently a board member of the Centre for Contemporary Photography. A jury member for the Flinders Street Station Design Competition 2013 and member of advisory boards for publications such as the Encyclopaedia of Australian Architecture Peter has also contributed over many years to the discourse regarding the adaptation and reuse of heritage buildings.
Tania Davidge
Tania Davidge is an architect, writer, researcher and educator. Graduating from Columbia University in New York, Tania is President of Citizens for Melbourne, a public space advocacy group who recently helped quash Apple’s proposed flagship store at Federation Square and supported its listing on the Victorian Heritage Register. Tania has extensive experience in architecture (as the Director of OoPLA/OpenHAUS), urban design and strategic design. As an active member of the architectural community Tania writes regularly for architectural publications, is a past member of the Design Review Panel for the Office of Design and Architecture in South Australia and has served as a member on multiple committees for the Australian Institute of Architects. In addition she has experience in curation and the development and organisation of architectural events and speaker series.
Peter Malatt
Peter Malatt is an architect and founding director of Six Degrees Pty Ltd, with over 25 years experience in the built environment. He has been project leader for many of the large institutional projects completed by Six Degrees, most notably for the University of Tasmania, the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of Arts, RMIT, and many other projects with retained heritage fabric. Peter was elected to the National Council of the AIA in 2013, and served as Victorian President from 2014-2015.
