Our common future? The re-emergence of collaborative housing in the 21st century.

The last few decades have seen the unravelling of a global “housing crisis”, characterized by worsening housing affordability not only for the most vulnerable, but also for middle-income groups. This situation has been compounded by the reality of climate change, which has prompted inhabitants to radically rethink the way we build and live in our homes. On top of this, an increasing number of people are living alone, especially in large cities, where loneliness and social isolation are raising severe mental and social health concerns.
In parallel to these phenomena, a ‘silent revolution’ in housing has unfolded, namely, the re-emergence of "collaborative housing". In this lecture, I will show how a series of collectively self-organised housing initiatives are developing in different parts of the world, seeking answers to the shortcomings of ‘conventional’ housing provision systems vis-à-vis the above-mentioned affordability, climate and social crises. I will also explore how collective action in housing can be accomplished from the perspective of co-production and co-design processes linking professionals (architects) and residents.
