Sharing housing: digitalisation, changing tenure and the future of housing
Share housing was once considered the realm of student housing and often stereotyped as dysfunctional party house, immortalised in stories such as "He died with a felafel in his hand". However, recent research has shown that more people are share housing for longer or returning to share housing later than life with growth in share housing even being seen in the 50+ age group. This shift is primarily being driven by financial pressures. At the same time, share housing is being facilitated digitally with platforms and apps mediating the processes of finding housing and flatmates, access to housing, and household management. The rise in sharing housing and its digitalisation suggests we need to critically think about the opportunities and challenges of different forms of living and the role of digital technologies in this, the implications of changing tenure forms, and what this means for the future of housing.

Sophia Maalsen is an ARC DECRA fellow researching practices of 'Hacking Housing' and is based in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. She researches alternative forms of housing including share housing and digital housing platforms. Her research is predominantly situated at the intersection of the digital and material and addresses the way digital technologies mediate and reconfigure housing, the urban and the everyday.
