Bachelor of Environments’ Urban Design Studies lecture course introduces students to theory, skills and techniques in urban design. This year students learnt how to read, experience and evaluate urban space. This exhibition shows results from Assignments 1 and 3: figure ground map and a physical model of selected urban squares around the world.
Figure Ground Assignment 1 introduced students to appreciation and distinctions of physical pattern of streets and the building blocks that take part in the consolidation of the physical form of cities, exposing them to concepts such as grain, permeability, continuity and fragmentation of the urban fabric.
The construction of a physical model has allowed students to extrapolate these concepts to the third dimension from the 2D representation of the figure ground, revealing the complexity of urban form.
The results are presented in this exhibition.
