Nathan Su is a speculative designer who works between media and architecture. He is co-founder of Inferstudio – an interdisciplinary world building practice. Inferstudio works through film, image and writing to critically imagine and investigate risks and opportunities on our shared technological, cultural and environmental horizons. In recent years, Nathan has worked as a project coordinator for Forensic Architecture in London, UK, where his research focused on developing new tools and workflows for dynamic image and video analysis.
In 2017, Nathan’s short film ‘The Atlas of False Desires’ won ‘Best Short Film’ at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival. His short film and graduate thesis project ‘Through Leviathan’s Eyes’ (co-written with Bethany Edgoose) has been exhibited in Europe and the US and was a finalist for the ‘Rookies Film of the Year (VFX)’ awards and the CGArchitect (Student Film) awards.
Nathan is also currently a lecturer at the UCLA AUD IDEAS Campus, where he teaches the M.S.AUD post-professional Entertainment Studio with Natasha Sandmeier. In 2018 -19, he taught design unit Intermediate 3 at the Architectural Association (AA) in London with Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo deOstos. He also ran a media studies course in compositing and animation at the AA and has run workshops in media for the Bartlett, UCL (London), and Strelka’s New Normal Programme (Moscow).
This lecture is part of the 2020 AA Visiting School: New Paper elective, a two-week intensive online design studio introducing students to contemporary digital design techniques, toolsets and workflows, striving for innovation in design resolution.
