Advancing new home sustainability through demand-side empowerment: investigating homebuyer decision-making

This research will provide a unique understanding of new homebuyers’ experiences in the home building process.

Australia/China Research Network on Planning Global City-Regions

A new Melbourne School of Design project is aiming to facilitate research in global city-regions.

Complex Adaptive Systems and Rule-Based Design

This project will foster collaborations between interdisciplinary research teams at The University of Melbourne and The University of Campinas in the general fields of architecture, urban design and computational modelling.

 

Cross-cultural analysis and capacity building in construction management practices focusing on housing and infrastructure sectors in Assam and Australia – An initiative of ‘Smart Villages” research

The aim of the project is to undertake a thorough analysis of the relevancy and applicability of existing construction management practices with a view to developing a range of solutions in a cross-cultural context between the State of Assam and Australia.

Development and Trial of Low-Carbon Living Co-Benefits Calculator

This project aims to develop and trial a prototype low-carbon precinct co-benefits calculator for urban planners and designers.

The effect of anticipatory modification on design: Evaluating housing adaptation grant programs for people with disabilities as drivers of innovation

This project will evaluate housing adaptation grant programs for people with disabilities as drivers of innovation.  The relationship between existing housing design and innovation in anticipating future modifications will be investigated.

The Future of Bicycle Transport in Urban China: a Case Study of Xi’an

This research aims to discover new knowledge and emerging business opportunities in the planning and development of bicycle transport in Chinese cities. 

 

Foodprint Melbourne

Foodprint Melbourne is an interdisciplinary research project that investigates Melbourne’s foodbowl, what Melbourne eats, and how we can ensure we plan for a resilient and sustainable food future for the city.

Future Cities Node Project

The Future Cities Node is a collaborative research program with the objective to identify opportunities across Melbourne where critical infrastructure services like energy, food, water and waste can be delivered in a way that is more distributed, local and networked.

Getting to Yes: Overcoming Barriers to Affordable Family Friendly Housing in the Central City

This project seeks to answer the question: What are the major barriers to creating family friendly affordable housing in central Melbourne, and how might these barriers be overcome?

How Can Food Hubs Catalyse Healthy and Resilient Local Food Systems in Victoria: Developing a Food Hub in the City of Casey

This project is using the City of Casey as a case study, to investigate the design and development of a Food Hub.

Intensifying Places: Transit-oriented Urban Design for Resilient Australian Cities

This project will develop and test a range of urban design frameworks and visions for urban intensification in Melbourne.

Level-crossing removals: learning from Melbourne's experience

This research project aims to deepen understanding of the issues involved in level crossing removals.

Mapping embodied environmental impacts in the built environment

The aim of this project is to integrate building embodied energy, water, greenhouse gas emissions and materials into a graphical information system in order to inform future city planning and management decisions that will help reduce the environmental impact of the built environment.

PedCatch - Topographical accessibility modelling for people with mobility impairments 

This study involves the development and testing of a novel digital design and modelling tool combining animated pedestrian accessibility and topographical mapping exploiting open‑source and crowd‑sourced geospatial data sets.

Planning the driverless city: what autonomous vehicles mean for Australasian cities

Through work funded by the Transport, Health and Urban Design Research Hub and Curtin University, this project is developing scenarios for city-shaping under various patterns of AV deployment.

Renewable Energy for Carbon Neutral Cities

This project will assist in reducing Victoria’s fossil fuel demand and greenhouse gas emissions, and inform planning and design actions aimed at realising carbon neutral urban development in response to current energy market and policies.

This study combines academic, government and community efforts to enhance cycling activity while addressing safety concerns.

Seacombe West – Australia’s First Regenerative Community

This project will apply regenerative design processes to return biodiversity, vibrancy and ongoing benefits to Lake Wellington and surrounding lands.

Southern Cities Research Centre

The SCRC is a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research centre with hubs in Brazil and Australia.

Transforming Building Environmental Design

This project will reduce national energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction and operation of new and existing buildings.

Transforming Housing: Affordable Housing for All

This project seeks to build partnerships to transform Melbourne’s housing industry, in order to meet social justice, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability challenges facing Melbourne and Australia.

Transit for All: Better Stations and Access Infrastructure

This research program addresses how to substantially improve public transport facilities, and get ever-larger numbers of travelers onto and away from transit efficiently and comfortably, without over-reliance on costly and outdated park-and-ride approaches.

Visions, Scenarios and Pathways for Low-Carbon Resilient Futures in Australian Cities

This project will explore and articulate visions, scenarios and pathways for a low carbon and resilient built environment in Australia.

Visualising an Irresistible Future

This project wll employ the "video feedforward" method which will alllow, through clever video editing, the creation of a vision of an irresistible future.
