Healthy Communities and Infrastructure

How can we plan, design and construct facilities and communities that are resilient, inclusive and promote better health outcomes? A wide range of current research projects and collaborative groups of researchers in the Faculty are addressing these kinds of challenges through a wide variety of tactics applied to local Melbourne, national and international community-settings.

Selected Projects

Amoonguna Transport Facilities

The Bower Studio team of academics, architects, builders and students collaborated with the MacDonnell Regional Council’s Civil Works team from Amoonguna to build and landscape a taxi/bus pavilion at the entrance to the community.

Advancing new home sustainability through demand-side empowerment: investigating homebuyer decision-making

This research will provide a unique understanding of new homebuyers’ experiences in the home building process.

Bellary Springs Community Centre

This collaboration between the University of Melbourne (Bower Studio), Gumula Aboriginal Corporation and the Bellary Springs (Western Australia) community members resulted in the development of the Bellary Springs Community Centre.

Belyuen Community Project

This Bower Studio project involved students working alongside residents of the Belyuen Community (Northern Territory) to construct a sheltered outdoor living area/kitchen for an Indigenous family.

Building an Integrated System for Australian Bushfire Prevention

This project aims to work closely with researchers, practitioners, the community and Crime Stoppers to develop a comprehensive approach to prevent arson.

Building Health Hardware in Papua New Guinea

The University of Melbourne joined with the University of Technology Lae and the Sipaia community in 2012 to build three innovative composting toilets.

Climate Change Adaptation: Suitability Indices of Human Settlement Fire Vulnerability

This project will develop an index of fire vulnerability to assess of existing and projected settlement areas, extant policy, and to guide improved adaptation to climate change.

Designing Australian Schools: A Spatial History of Innovation, Pedagogy and Social Change

Designing Australia’s Schools is an historical, cross disciplinary study of innovations in the design of Australian primary and secondary schools across the twentieth century.

 

Development and Trial of Low-Carbon Living Co-Benefits Calculator

This project aims to develop and trial a prototype low-carbon precinct co-benefits calculator for urban planners and designers.

Designing for Wellbeing: Realizing Benefits for Patients through Best Practice Hospital Design

This project will investigate the environmental factors which contribute to patient wellbeing with the aim of establishing best-practice standards for optimal design of healthcare facilities.

The effect of anticipatory modification on design: Evaluating housing adaptation grant programs for people with disabilities as drivers of innovation

This project will evaluate housing adaptation grant programs for people with disabilities as drivers of innovation.  The relationship between existing housing design and innovation in anticipating future modifications will be investigated.

Effects of feedback and incentive-based insurance on driving behaviours

This project is the first experimental study to examine the extent to which direct-feedback and incentive-based insurance modify a driver's behaviour.

Equitable Outcomes in Adaptation to Sea Level Rise

This research aimed to develop an approach for identifying the social and equity outcomes of various strategies to adapt to sea-level rise.

Evaluating 21st Century Learning Environments

This project will evaluate the effectiveness of new generation learning environments in secondary schools.

The Future of Bicycle Transport in Urban China: a Case Study of Xi’an

This research aims to discover new knowledge and emerging business opportunities in the planning and development of bicycle transport in Chinese cities. 

Getting to Yes: Overcoming Barriers to Affordable Family Friendly Housing in the Central City

This project seeks to answer the question: What are the major barriers to creating family friendly affordable housing in central Melbourne, and how might these barriers be overcome?

How Can Food Hubs Catalyse Healthy and Resilient Local Food Systems in Victoria: Developing a Food Hub in the City of Casey

This project is using the City of Casey as a case study, to investigate the design and development of a Food Hub.

Intensifying Places: Transit-oriented Urban Design for Resilient Australian Cities

This project will develop and test a range of urban design frameworks and visions for urban intensification in Melbourne.

Level-crossing removals: learning from Melbourne's experience

This research project aims to deepen understanding of the issues involved in level crossing removals.

Neonatal and Composting Ablutions Facility in Suanum, PNG

The University of Melbourne joined with the Suanum community in Papua New Guinea to build a neonatal and composting toilet facility.

PedCatch - Topographical accessibility modelling for people with mobility impairments 

This study involves the development and testing of a novel digital design and modelling tool combining animated pedestrian accessibility and topographical mapping exploiting open‑source and crowd‑sourced geospatial data sets.

Renewable Energy for Carbon Neutral Cities

This project will assist in reducing Victoria’s fossil fuel demand and greenhouse gas emissions, and inform planning and design actions aimed at realising carbon neutral urban development in response to current energy market and policies.

Safer Cycling in the Urban Road Environment

This study combines academic, government and community efforts to enhance cycling activity while addressing safety concerns.

Seacombe West – Australia’s First Regenerative Community

This project will apply regenerative design processes to return biodiversity, vibrancy and ongoing benefits to Lake Wellington and surrounding lands.

Transforming Housing: Affordable Housing for All

This project seeks to build partnerships to transform Melbourne’s housing industry, in order to meet social justice, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability challenges facing Melbourne and Australia.

Travelling Together: Disability Inclusive Road Development in Papua New Guinea

This research project investigated how road accessibilty impacts on the lives of people with disabilities and developed approaches for engaging those people in future road consultations, planning and development.

Visualising an Irresistible Future

This project wll employ the "video feedforward" method which will alllow, through clever video editing, the creation of a vision of an irresistible future.

Women in Transport Leadership in Australasia Knowledge Network

Women in Transport Leadership or WiTL is the first knowledge network created in the Australasian region solely dedicated to empowering women and developing a critical mass of female transport leaders.
