ExLab Experimental Wooden Furniture

Semester 2, 2019

This subject explores the ExLaB experimental design process by focusing on making with wood in its different forms. Combining traditional wood working techniques with cutting edge digital fabrication processes designers will push the possibilities of a material used for millennia.

Working in pairs designers are introduced to making techniques, machining processes and the experimental design process through two stool design exercises each focusing on a machine and material. Each designer then develops their own piece of furniture inspired by experimental prototyping and play resulting in functional pieces that display a deep understanding of wood and the different way to manipulate and work it.
