Graft

A symbiotic relationship between pedestrian pathways and the buildings of the EBD.

The Graft is a structural intervention that strikes a pedestrian link across EBD. Guided by trajectories from streets leading toward the site, the plan form is a product of these axial extensions. This idea stems from the need to provide an interesting and obvious link from docklands to North Melbourne, and also a community spine that enables a series of activities native to community interaction and movement. The Graft platforms fold up and into other plates and surrounding buildings to provide a multi level network. The gesture of a gradient network of walkways and platforms is to allow a less formal or direct path where the community can embrace areas for different purposes. The platforms are offset and layered to try and dissolve the line of elevation that is flat until a sharp nine meter rise at the platform edge.
