Sustainable Dreaming

Public access allows people to become aware of the space, and its processes, as the site slowly evolves through space and time.

Sustainable Dreaming is a proposal rooted in restoring cultural balance within the city. The project has found inspiration from the philosophies and traditions of the original Aboriginal inhabitants and incorporated these as core values to the site. This is a staged development that uses phytoremediation to clean the site. Business is kept onsite during the staged development, with unsustainable industries replaced by ones that are sustainable, and new SME (small to medium-enterprise) tenants. Importantly, public ownership of the new suburb is encouraged by giving the public access to the site during the stages of redevelopment. Understanding that the site’s landscape will change over time both because of the redevelopment but also resulting from climate change, the design incorporates a strategy for sea-level rise. The design also includes a radical suggestion to connect the Docklands and North Melbourne into one community.

There is so much culture and environmental activity on the site that one might almost forget that there is also a significant residential population.  For further details of the proposal, click through on the images below.
