Space Vessel Hampshire II

Demonstrating urban agriculture practices, connecting businesses and creating a sense of ownership for local residents.

Located in the heart of Sunshine, the Space Vessel Hampshire II creates a positive community space, while activating the local retail environment. The project makes use of the large median strip in Hampshire road, creating visual linkages between restaurants, cafes, and food outlets along the main road. It gives pedestrians greater priority over vehicular traffic and provides more opportunity for local businesses to expand onto their street frontage. Incorporating a 24 hour café, classroom space, community space and green roof, the Space Vessel’s main feature is the ‘gro-fitti’ system on the façade. Patrons of the café plant herbs in re-used tin cans and place them in the framework of the building. The ‘gro-fitti’ demonstrates urban agriculture practices and creates a sense of ownership for local residents.
