Duration is everyone’s experience, and for many it is embedded in a culture that has already integrated history, place and social relations. For some – for an increasing number of millions – this is not the case, so that the context for duration and transition has to be makeshift or invented, often in temporary or provisional conditions or states.

These projects arise from thinking about this temporary or provisional state. They do so by finding links between local, sometimes absurdly small experiences, with global, nearly always fraught issues. The projects use the products of architectural practice to present subjects and compositions which standard professional practice tends to avoid. Sometimes a building seems to emerge from the process: but, like the drawings, models and texts which look like architectural documents but are not, in these projects, the building is not a ‘building’…

…Even though liminality can be anchored by the absolutes of dawn and dusk (over which we have no control), in its form as migration, exile, relocation or and displacement, there is an unsettling mixture of control and freedom. Control and freedom are not binaries, but are always co-present. This is the larger matrix from which these works emerge.
