Learning from Making: Design and Prototyping
For over twenty years now digital fabrication and design technologies have been explored in the educational context of architecture and the arts. From the creation and visualisation of complex formal architectures to the construction of prototypes, such as pavilions, material prototypes, construction technologies and the blending of engineering and design, the potentials seem to be endless. Parametric and discreet design paradigms suggest just a few examples of how fabrication has influenced and enabled design experimentation. What is the value of prototyping in design education? How has education shifted and what are the hurdles and future trajectories for prototyping and fabrication in architecture and design education?
