How does a deliberate engagement with a hydrosphere injured by climate change impact the development of new curricula for the design studio?  Given the anticipation of major destabilizations to our hydrological cycles, it is vital to question whether the conventions of design practice as well as teaching still hold water? As the development of established disciplinary and practice standards in architecture have been informed by the presumption of a stabilized Holocene, when formulating new design courses, could the design fields acclimatize to a new set of contexts and practices?

Projections for the regular flooding and even disappearance of some of the city’s established neighborhoods and communities are potential scenarios for Melbourne’s future under climate change. These studios focused on addressing the looming urban risks related to water. These challenges is anticipated to be characterized by its acute overabundance during what are projected to be increasingly severe storm events. Other risks also relate to its counterpoint, where Melbourne is expected to experience water scarcity during prolonged droughts.

Through a rigorous engagement with the challenges of climate change, students imagined other kinds of water/city interfaces for Melbourne’s future.
