Dr Gao Shang

Biography

Dr Gao Shang joined the University of Melbourne as a Lecturer in Construction Management in 2017. He coordinates and teaches courses of Risk in Construction, and Measurement of Building Works at the postgraduate level. As a researcher, Dr Gao has diverse research interests in construction management with a focus on Lean Construction. He first encountered the concept of “Lean” in 2006 at Loughborough University when he was doing an MSc in Construction Management. He then relocated to Singapore to pursue his PhD with Professor Low Sui Pheng at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and was awarded his doctorate for his work on establishing an implementation framework of the Toyota Way for large construction firms in China. He is the co-author of Lean Construction Management – the Toyota Way, which is the first book ever published to address the Toyota Way practices in the construction industry to achieve lean construction management. Dr Gao is also on the Editorial Panel for Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Management, Procurement and Law.

Before joining UoM, Gao Shang was a Lecturer and Programme Coordinator for the Construction Management (Building) degree of the University of Newcastle, Australia (Singapore campus) where he taught many subjects. Dr Gao was also appointed as an adjunct faculty member to SIM University and BCA Academy, and developed the Building & Construction Authority Academy’s (BCA) Special Diploma in Lean Construction for senior building professionals in Singapore, which aims to equip industry practitioners with the knowledge of lean principles and methods for higher productivity. He has also served as consultant to large construction firms in China and Singapore.
