Responsibilities
As a tutor your responsibilities include preparing and delivering tutorials or studio classes during the teaching period, in each subject in which you are tutoring. You may also be required to contribute to the marking of all assessments and the collation of results. You may need to attend 1-2 hour subject meetings throughout the semester, as required as well as tutor briefing before the start of the semester.
The University of Melbourne is a child safe organisation. You will be required to hold a valid Working with Children Check as a condition of employment in this role.
Candidates
Applicants must be able to demonstrate appropriate academic background: typically we would expect an undergraduate degree with studies in the appropriate fields, plus suitable postgraduate qualifications or current admission in a postgraduate course in those fields. Applicants must demonstrate good organisation, communication and presentation skills. Professional experience in the field is also encouraged.
Your subject preference may be used by the assessors when making their selection. Please contact the subject coordinator to discuss your preference to teach in the subjects you are applying for, if you are concerned that the preference may disadvantage you.
If you would like to find out more about the specific skills required to teach in a subject or the subject content, please consult the subject entry in the University Handbook or contact the subject coordinator directly.
Pay scales
Current pay scales for casual tutors can be found here.
Submitting an application
IMPORTANT: Please note that there may be fewer casual teaching positions available for 2026 compared to previous years, and some of the subjects listed above may eventually not require any casual teaching support.
If you are interested in tutoring a class or studio, please create a profile and lodge an application during the application period. If you have taught at the Faculty before, please update your details in the system and put in an application for the subjects you intend to apply for this coming semester. Applicants must apply for each teaching period in which they wish to tutor.
