At the launch event of the newly established Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication (ADD+F) Research Hub at the Melbourne School of Design, ABP Faculty members of the research hub will discuss Experiments, Disruptions, Affordances – Practices for Future Innovations, with national and international guests.

Guests include Dr Areti Markopoulou, from IAAC in Barcelona, Associate Professor Paul Nicholas, from the research group CITA at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. From Melbourne will join for the discussion Professor Flora Salim, from CIDDA at RMIT University, and Dr. Gergana Rusenova from Swinburne University of Technology. While the research undertaken by participants ranges from artistic experiments to problem- and demand-orientated investigations, each guest will start with an opening statements on their approaches to innovation and research. This will be followed by conversations around questions relating to design and innovation: What are the processes and methods that lead to innovation? What are different experiences on how to innovate, how to make discoveries? In short the question we are investigating is ‘how to innovate?’
Speakers biographies:
Dr. Areti Markopoulou, IAAC, Barcelona
Areti is the Academic Director at IAAC in Barcelona, where she leads the Advanced Architecture Group, a multidisciplinary research group exploring how design and science can positively impact and transform the present and future of our built spaces, the way we live and interact. Her research and practice focus on redefining the architecture of cities through an ecological and technological spectrum combining design with biotechnologies, new materials, digital fabrication and big data. Areti is co-founder of the art/tech gallery StudioP52 and co-editor of Urban Next. She is the project coordinator of a number of European Research funded Projects on topics including urban regeneration, circular design and construction and multidisciplinary educational models in the digital age. Areti’s work has been featured in exhibitions worldwide and together with Lydia Kallipoliti she has been appointed the Head Curator for the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2022.
A/Prof. Paul Nicholas, CITA, Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen
Paul is Associate Professor at the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture, Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, and director of the international masters programme Computation in Architecture. Paul’s research develops new methods for architectural design and fabrication based on digital information flows between predictive modelling, registration and making. His current research responds to the need to shift architecture’s material culture, and explores how sensing and machine learning can be linked to robotic fabrication to enable extended sustainable and bio-based architectural production.
Prof. Flora Salim, RMIT University, Melbourne
Flora Salim is a Professor in the School of Computing Technologies, the co-Deputy Director of RMIT Centre for Information Discovery and Data Analytics (CIDDA), and an Associate Investigator of ARC Centre of Excellence in Automated Decision Making and Society. Flora leads the Context Recognition and Urban Intelligence (CRUISE) group. Her research expertise include human behaviour modelling, time-series data mining, machine learning on stream and sensor data, and ubiquitous computing. She was the recipient of the Humboldt-Bayer Fellowship (from the Bayer Foundation GmbH), Humboldt Fellowship (from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation), Victoria Fellowship 2018 (from VIC government), the RMIT Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research Excellence–Early Career Researcher 2016, the RMIT Award for Research Impact - Technology 2018. She serves as Associate Editor of the PACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT), Area Editor of Pervasive and Mobile Computing, and a Steering Committee member of ACM UbiComp.
Dr. Gergana Rusenova, Lecturer in Architecture, Swinburne University of Technology
Gergana is Lecturer in Architecture in the Faculty of Health, Arts and Design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Her research focuses on material system’s behaviour and the development of material – and fabrication-informed design processes. Gergana obtained her PhD degree in Zurich, Switzerland with the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication, Prof. F. Gramazio and Prof. M. Kohler. Her doctoral research was formed upon the discovery of a novel building material system that enables the construction of fully recyclable architectural elements. Prior to her doctoral research, Gergana graduated the Integrative Technologies and Architectural Design Research (ITECH) program at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, under the supervision of Prof. A. Menges and Prof. J. Knippers. Gergana gained practical experience in Germany working for the engineering offices Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineering and SL Rasch Special and Lightweight Structures, as well as for the architectural office Prof. W. Kergassner.
