Lecture Theatres

The Basement houses three theatre spaces – the largest seating over 500 and two seating 120. These spaces feature superior audio-visual and digital technology.

  • The Singapore Theatre

The Singapore Theatre seats 120 people and is used for lectures, seminars, panel discussions and public events.

Modern Singapore owes a great deal of its vibrant built environment to a remarkable group of Melbourne alumni who took their degrees in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and went home to (literally) build their new nation. From the outset this group – fondly known as “The Singapore Pioneers” showed great interest in not just architectural design but also the urban environment.

Over many years they occupied leadership positions in Singapore’s key development bodies – the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Housing and Development Board, the Singapore Improvement Board, the National Parks Board and more. As a result, much of the streetscape and the urban fabric of this bustling city owes a debt to the University of Melbourne.

The Singapore Giving Group was enthusiastically led by the “Pioneers” since their first meeting in 2008.

The naming of this theatre recognises the important contribution to the profession of our many Singapore supporters.

  • The Malaysian Theatre

The Malaysian Theatre seats 120 people and is used for lectures, seminars, panel discussions and public events.

From 1954 when the University of Melbourne graduated its first Malaysian architect, Mr Kington Loo, until December 2014 when this building opened, our Malaysian alumni group has been one of the most influential as well as the most numerous.

Roughly 650 of our alumni are living in Malaysia, while many hundreds more made careers in Australia or overseas. Our Malaysian graduates have made a huge impact on the built environment in their country, and maintain their connection with the University of Melbourne.

The naming of this Theatre recognises the important contribution to the profession of our many Malaysian supporters.
