AILA, Aboriginal Landscape Architect + Visual Artist

Award winning Aboriginal registered landscape architect and visual artist Paul Herzich is the only practicing Aboriginal landscape architect in Australia. Paul was the first Aboriginal student to complete a Bachelor of Design Studies in 2000 and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 2002 at the University of Adelaide, South Australia.

He has a passion for the integration of Aboriginal cultures in the landscape and a strong focus on the health and well-being, and representation of Aboriginal people, art and culture in the public realm. Paul has been in the landscape industry for 30 years and the visual art industry for 15 years.

Paul has considerable experience in infrastructure and public realm project delivery. He has experience in designing and delivering landscape architectural projects and visual art projects for state and local government agencies.

Paul regularly holds his own Aboriginal art exhibitions and travels across the country to publicly discuss Indigenous landscape architecture to practioners, students and the general public in open forums. Paul is based in Adelaide, which is on his traditional country.

Paul has been a member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) for 21 years and was an executive member of the AILA SA Chapter for 12 years. He is now a member of the AILA National Committees, including Co-Chair of the Connection to Country Committee and the Indigenous Perspectives and Knowledge Committee.
