This spatial design response utilises the unique nature of 45 Downstairs to create an immersive and symbolically rich space for the performance of Hekabe. It draws on the pre-existing architectural features of the location (the window wall and the stairs) to communicate the environment in a very physical manner, which in turn, allows the viewers to imagine themselves as witnesses to the actual events of Hekabe rather than simply as a viewer of a performance.

The setting, which will be used for the majority of the performance, features a tent in the background, whilst in the foreground, the existing structural pillars of the space are wrapped so as to resemble Greek marble pillars. These not only further communicate the period and setting of the performance, but also work to frame the performance as well, ensuring that all the main action occurs between these two pillars.
