My design proposal for the Black Medea explores the way in which Medea finds
herself caught between two worlds. Medea’s domestic home with Jason and her Child has never brought true fulfillment to Medea, and she is presented with a constant reminder of the world in which she truly belongs as the Chorus continually tries to lure her back to the land. Medea finds herself in a fragile predicament within her family home, but with the constant reminder of the Chorus and the sound of the wind, the land is a dominant force which is constantly present throughout the entirety of the play. Medea’s return to the land is inevitable.
In the space intended for the Merlyn Theatre, I have explored a separation of two stage areas to reflect the two worlds which Medea inhabits. I have incorporated textural and distinguishable elements of the land to create an immersive and visceral experience of this confronting play for the audience. The characters act from a hanging stage suspended from the roof, whilst the audience sit up close in-the-round with their feet in the sand.
