To interpret this story for a modern audience, I combined the concept of ‘indigenous’ and ‘modern’ in my design. The set design consists of a natural surrounding and a platform in the middle which represents Jason and Medea’s house in the coastal city. To create a contrast, the material used for the surrounding set is real wood, whereas the middle platform is a contemporary wooden floor. Separation of space gives the audience a clearer sense when the scene changes to another environment. The two images display two moments in different environments. Moment 1 is Medea’s monologue in the desert. She is making a vow, so Medea and the tree branch which represents her spirit are lit up to enhance her vow. On the other hand, moment 2 displays an intense scene when Jason and Medea are arguing in their house, the light spot on them and the house. The surroundings can slightly be seen to enhance the surrounding environment as it always exists even the characters are in the coastal city.
