The Urban Village
The building is responding to four issues; how to keep the history of such festival hall alive; how to encourage people to get things fixed rather than replaced; how to reduce the embodied energy of the items we consume; and how to reduce the footprint of our city. This project, therefore is a village comprising of four different communities, a making community, a farming community, a tinker community, and an entertaining community.
The residents of this village have the capacity to follow their passions within. This gives credence to the rise in people engaging in activities that they are passionate about outside of their normal occupation. There is a movement to reduce working hours, and when this is successful, and we start to work less, precincts like this will enable people to follow their passions outside of work.
The building adds to the fabric of the suburb a variety of spaces, while also insulating itself. This is a community of makers of different creeds that aims to bring how we live and work into a 21st century mindset. We cannot continue as we have for the past 50 years, it is unsustainable.
