Bladehouse is a live/work dwelling located in South Yarra, Melbourne, Australia. The dwelling responds to the 21st Century demand for adaptable spaces where dwellers can comfortably live and work in efficient and effective ways. In its design and function, the dwelling challenges traditional notions of domesticity in an innovative, creative, environmentally responsible and culturally sensitive manner.

The clients for this project are two young professionals couples in their late twenties who will run a fernery, workshop and exhibition space together from home, opening up the house to the public and surrounding parkland by day and closing down to private mode at night. Indoor/outdoor connection is an experiential quality that

is essential. The aesthetic and functional design of Bladehouse
has been inspired by an inherent connection to nature and
place; a concept that has developed from a strong respect for the Wurundjeri land in which the dwelling sits. The site was selected for its glimpses towards the CBD and Yarra River and its adjacency and accessibility to a community green space realm.

Drawing on the aesthetic and functional ideas of the Indigenous Australian vernacular typology of the “gunya”, the following items for exploration were identified:
(1) repetitive forms, (2) natural/recycled materials, (3) close proximity to water source, (4) central meeting point, (5) public and private areas.
