THE HEALING PLACE

This project investigates on the issue of late-life depression in Australia amount the senior groups with local and Chinese background, exploring the concept of healing in architecture from both evidence-based and intuitional approaches. Phenomenology is applied in the research process to discover the emotional factors that have impacts on people’s perception of space. Sensory enrichment, Social engagement and Cultural recognition are the three main research aspects conducted to discover the spatial qualities and architectural strategies that induct positive emotional interaction between the elderly with their living environment. The outcome, developed upon the aforementioned research, interpreted in the design of a residential aged care building and master planning of the site in Blackburn, attempts to implement an emotionally healing atmosphere in architecture with the key idea of strengthening the awareness of the residents with their surrounding ambient and promote reflection on self-existence in their daily living.­­
