St Kilda Aquatic Centre Description Text

Since swimming is a big part of Melburnians way of life, the St Kilda Aquatic Centre aims to give Melburnians a new experience of public bathing. Historically, the Palais Theatre that sits next to the site was one of the first theatres to ever screen feature- length films back in the early 20th century such as The Story of the Kelly Gang and more. In order to attract people to come to the site, the programme mixes both public bathing and theatrical activities together. The collaboration between the aquatic centre and the existing Palais Theatre to host activities such as Dive-In Cinema and more would be the main attraction.

Additionally, the St Kilda Aquatic Centre seeks to educate the public about renewable energy and to improve the way how we operate aquatic centres since aquatic centres are notoriously heavy users of energy. According to research, it shows that 64% of the energy consumption comes from pool heating. Hence, this building aims to be the trendsetter in achieving zero-carbon aquatic centre by integrating technologies such as renewable solar energy, energy generated from gym equipment through micro-inverter technology and piezoelectric energy harvesting.
