In the contemporary context, the art gallery is no longer a purely independent space for exhibiting artworks, but a place where allows people to interact with the art works. Compared with traditional art, people are almost considered as an active participant with contemporary art instead of separate with them like the past. The gallery collects fragments from past, present, and future, and creates intersections between times. The new NGV contemporary gallery intends to provide people with an interactive experience, not only with local and international artworks but also with the architecture itself. Spaces are separated according to its functions, and reconnected with each other in a more non-hierarchically way, which encourage the integration of the public and the culture of contemporary art.

The design approach for NGV-C is to build up the interaction relationship between public and contemporary art. The gallery become not a monument, but a platform for discussions, and for people to interact with each other, with art and with the architecture. The non-hierarchical spaces of the gallery encourage people to move freely and provide people the opportunity to interpret art in their own way. So, visiting the gallery is not only a process of learning from artworks but also an experience of communicating with ourselves.
