As a result of the current global pandemic, we are experiencing a drastic change in the way we use public spaces and civic buildings as we adapt to new spatial requirements.

Restaurants, office buildings and residential towers in our existing city have shown themselves challenged with a sense of containment and crowding. How can an alternative model for the city expand and de-compress the city’s occupiable space and assist with ideas of permeability and flow?

My thesis is a speculative project that seeks to explore how the many serendipitous spatial and social outcomes arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic might be used to create a new urban condition in the Melbourne CBD.

Looking at new modes of public gathering, social opportunities, and the reappropriation of public infrastructure, there are clues to a rethinking of the fabric of the city. In exploring these spatial types we find that they offer an opportunity to remedy our strained social relationships, to give a sense of generosity, connection, and a new sense of shared communality.
