Density & Disease- Melbourne’s Public Housing

My project looks at the opportunity to explore adjustments to the public housing high-rise tower estates around Melbourne. The harsh lockdown has put a spotlight on these outdated designs and demonstrated how these enclosed pre-cast concrete structures are not providing suitable liveable spaces. In highlighting the issues within Melbourne’s public housing, my goal is to make a case for government investment in this type of housing stock around our city. Exploiting Coronavirus as a catalyst that has brought an increased interest in our city’s outdoor spaces, I offer a designed visualisation of what our public housing tower estates could become. Allowing residents to have the option of interacting with an outdoor experience and making these sites more inhabitable places for the residents.
