The function of today’s multi-residential developments is being displaced as machines for survival. This reflects the deeply prosaic way of living of contemporary society. They are utilitarian to a fault, subservient to profit, and ultimately do not provide any means of social connection. This project’s scheme attempts to re-evaluate, re-define, and re-place how humans inhabit these spaces. Through the documentation of various domestic rituals and sorting these out based on the ‘dwelling’ vs. the ‘lingering’, you are then able to fully maximise your use of the architecture, thus making the house a machine to cultivate the self. The poetry of living is now within the mundane, the normal, and the domestic.
