Something About Markets

Preston Market, in the site’s surrounding context, is seen as a living, breathing neighbourhood of the city, fostering community while acting as a microcosm of the suburb’s character and diversity.

The design for this multi-use residential project seeks to understand, abstract and re-imagine characteristics identified as promoting community at Preston market.

To achieve a comparable sense of belonging, the qualities of visual permeability, intimacy to the human scale, diversity and flexibility are explored.

The permanency of architectural enclosure and the boundary between private/communal and inside/outside are questioned through foldable, moveable and retractable architectural elements.

The resulting movement of light from the foldable partitions and people will shape the temporality of the space, giving agency and autonomy to the residents in defining their own space and choosing their desired level of social interaction to suit their changing needs.
