Nicola Hayton

My design proposal for Black Medea was an exploration of the past for the two characters. I wanted my design to capture their history, namely the tension between their past selves and who they have become.

The mirrored floor reflects the textured paper and gives the sense of a much bigger space. It creates this optical illusion of rolling waves; as it expands infinitely through the reflection. It also gives the stage this mysticism, as the lights bounce off the floor and create this moving sea of colour and circular reflections. It's this incorporation of the textual elements, alluding to sand and sea almost as if nature is encroaching on the characters and this dual force is swallowing them up.

The torn cave like structure, the sand and the gauze creates a gritty and naturalistic setting. The design reveals the violence within the play, the walls have been literally torn apart revealing the emotional state of its characters who are caught between two worlds.
