The main topic of this design is to alleviate the salinity issue of Darebin Parkland.

There are salinity issues and some containments in the duck pond within the leachate management system. Meanwhile, a large amount of land without vegetation cover will become more saline along with the water.

Two types of strategies are provided for water and soil salinity:

First, the site allows rainwater and drainage from the nearby street to get into the rain garden and then flow into the duck pond after sediment and phytoremediation to alleviate the salinity and high evaporation.

In addition, floating waterfront and floating wetlands serve as a physical mask on the water surface could protect the duck ponds from direct sunlight, and reduce evaporation during the dry season.

Furthermore, shallow marsh allows hyperaccumulating plants of inorganic contaminants to occur phytoremediation.

In terms of soil, increase vegetation cover to reduce evaporation. Plant selection tends to deep roots, small leaves, and tolerance to salinity and drought such as saltbush because these plants usually could store more carbon and increase the water capacity of the soil. Then the water table will gradually increase.

Hyperaccumulating Plant tissues’ phytoremediation could create a better growing environment for high biodiversity value species in the coming decades.
