The Duality of War: Centre for Peacemaking

The Shrine of Remembrance is a monument that silences all in its vicinity through its solemn environment. We merely accept the information that is given to us regarding conflict and move on, not knowing the bigger can prevent future generations from fully understanding conflict. This will only lead to the repetition of history. This project spatially explores the multifaceted nature of conflict and attempts to provide awareness to its complexity through the concept of spatial scars. Developments in an environment that is a result of past conflicts.

Malayan New Villages which were internment camps setup by the Commonwealth during the Malayan Emergency is a large inspiration to the project and example of a complex conflict in which there was no clear antagonist as well as being an event that acts as a precursor to the peacekeeping movement. By using spatial strategies adopted from Asian influence and the New Villages, the project seeks to extend the theme of the Terrace Courtyard of the Shrine and juxtapose through its topography as opposed to the monument on a hill.
