Urban Planning

Urban Planning

Urban planning is a field that focuses on people, places and interactions within urban settings. Urban planners explore social, environmental, technical, political, legal and policy-driven factors to create spaces that are not only equitable and sustainable but also inclusive.

As an urban planner, you can shape and implement policies that influence various critical areas such as land use, urban form, social infrastructure, transportation, economic development, and public open space. Imagine the impact you could make by rethinking and redesigning our transport networks to better connect cities and suburbs, or by actively participating in the development and planning of policies that guide the growth of our urban corridors.

One of the main goals of urban planning is to create places that are livable and equitable for all residents. We could focus on green urban environments with green roofs, public gardens and cities that help support our natural environment. You could find new ways to integrate sustainable or indigenous practice into how we build and use spaces. Or find ways to create communities so that our environments are safe and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

When Callum decided to study the Bachelor of Design, he wanted to explore his options.

“The Bachelor of Design provided a holistic and flexible learning experience that allowed me to indulge my interests in a range of fields, including urban planning, construction management, architecture, property economics, and law. I’d always been interested in the concept of urban/town planning and my major can lead to various niche or broad fields on a community, state, national or international scale.”

Urban planning is a critical field that plays a crucial role in adapting to global changes that impact our cities. By studying urban planning, you can play a vital role in shaping our future cities.
