User Experience Design

User experience design, also known as UX design, is the process of creating products, services, and environments that are user-friendly, effective, and engaging. This could be designing web interfaces, apps or new products. Studying user experience design is about combining your creative skills with the practical problem-solving skills to create intuitive and efficient digital solutions.

Considering a career in user experience design? In the next 5 years, UX design will become an increasingly important industry as businesses and organizations continue to prioritize the user experience and create more digital platforms to connect with consumers.

My specific interests lie in the creation step of creating digital products, which is one of the main reasons the User Experience Design major in the Bachelor of Design appealed to me. A lot of tertiary institutions offer qualifications in the technical side of IT, however I really liked that the Bachelor of Design offered a more creative alternative, focused on problem-solving and innovative thinking.

UX design will be important in the next few years technology grows and we become even more reliant on digital products and services. As more and more people use smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other digital devices, the user experience becomes central to a business model. What do you do if you’re looking to buy something online? Or looking for a new restaurant to try? You probably Google them, search them on Instagram, or check if they have a TikTok. If a brand doesn’t have a digital presence online, or their website if hard to navigate, you’re probably less likely to buy from them.

Companies that create user-friendly, intuitive, and engaging products and services will have a significant advantage over their competitors. When customers have a positive experience with a product or service, they are more likely to continue using it and to recommend it to others.

One of the next big steps for UX design will be in accessibility. As our population ages, digital products are more common and we’re dependent on them for managing our day-to-day lives, we need to ensure that products and services are accessible to everyone. This will require UX designers to create products and services that are easy to use for people with a wide range of abilities and needs.

‘Design thinking’ can be applied to so many different industries. For me, it’s really exciting to know that there are so many potential options and understanding that design underpins them all makes me really excited to continue my learnings in my design degree.
