Thesis

Riverside Urbanity: River Edge Typomorphologies and Social Encounters

Urban riversides can either foster vibrant public spaces that promote social interaction or become restrictive barriers that segregate communities. This research explores this duality by examining the morphological characteristics of urban rivers and their impact on urbanity. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from urban sociology, landscape architecture, and urban design, this thesis employs a multi-scale approach at the city center, neighborhood, and riverside levels, using data from both online open platform and on-site field research. The goal is to advance the understanding of how to transform restrictive barriers into inclusive spaces along riversides, thereby enhancing urban vitality and connectivity.
