Sunshine Studio Atelier: Week Four

We arrived at the studio for week four to discover some of the pea seeds the students had planted in used coffee cups the previous week had sprouted! It was an exciting find that got the students talking again about their own home gardening attempts.

Continuing on from Kate’s presentation last week, VEIL’s Kirsten Larsen began the session talking to the students about the future of food. She included case studies from around the world of groups who are attempting to address the growing risk of food insecurity and ensuring all people have access to “sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.” (WHO, 1996)

We were lucky to have Andy van den Dobbelsteen of TU Delft in the Netherlands join us for the day as a guest critic and participant in the day’s proceedings. Andy provided some very valuable feedback for the students who all made their initial presentations of their individual projects. There are some promising projects being developed with a number of students focusing their plans in and around the station precinct as well as a project that will address the development of our temporary home, Sunshine Plaza Shopping Centre.

Brian and Frank from the Sunshine and District Historical Society kindly took us on a tour of the old administrative building from the Harvester Factory, including the boardroom and famous men’s bathroom, complete with brass fixtures and tiles depicting tableaux of the harvester history. The SDHS have been very generous with the time and information that they have contributed to the Sunshine Studio Atelier.
