Vidal Paton-Cole

Biography

Vidal is trained as a Civil and Structural Engineer and a lecturer in Construction Management at the University of Melbourne, Vidal teaches construction technology subjects at the Master and Undergraduate levels that includes construction of low-rise residential buildings, medium to high-rise residential buildings and commercial buildings and facilities. These technology-based units demonstrate to students how various materials and sub-systems in the various classes of buildings are constructed in compliance with the relevant codes of practice and Australian Standards. His research interest is in construction technology (methods and materials); performance of building systems; innovative construction systems; building quality in construction; and use of technology in construction. Vidal’s research related to performance of residential buildings was the basis of his PhD research and has published in the areas of construction defects in residential buildings, response of building structural system and performance of residential buildings constructed with cold-formed steel. With more than ten years’ experience in the Australian construction industry, he spent most of his time in industry practice designing extensive range of residential buildings; assessing building performance of non-structural and structural elements in compliance with regulations; and documenting condition reports for various building construction. Vidal is a registered Building Practitioner (Class EC) with the Victorian Building Authority and will work with the lead investigator to integrate relevant information on construction regulatory provision of housing for people with disabilities.
