Merrick Morley

Sessional Teaching Excellence Award

This award acknowledges and celebrates the valuable contributions of a sessional teaching staff member toward enhancing students' learning experiences.  It is awarded to Merrick Morley.

This award recognises Merrick’s outstanding achievements as an inspiring tutor and much sought after mentor. His contributions played a key role in maintaining high teaching standards and learning expectations during the very difficult covid-years, in multi-disciplinary subjects critical for a cohesive MSD learning experience.

Merrick has an impressive record of connecting with students and assisting lecture delivery in Urban Design Theory in online, dual and on-campus modes. Merrick has also taught Urban Coding and Design software tutorials both online and on-campus. He has developed support materials, motivated students, and mentored novice tutors. He has contributed to MUD design studio crits, informally mentored MUP Minor Thesis students, supported student exhibitions in the MSD Atrium, and assisted Urban Collective events.

Merrick's teaching is driven by strong commitment for excellence in learning outcomes, a special capacity to share his enthusiasm, and a drive to elevate the knowledge base of built environment professionals. He is continually looking to improve teaching methods and style according to the subject, task, tutorial group, and each individual student. In his words "this is due to a combination of curiosity and motivation in the subject content itself, but also as a kind of repayment for all the great tutors, lecturers, and thinkers engaged with in the past".

Merrick completed the Melbourne CSHE teaching certificate in February 2022.

Examples of formal ESS feedback include the following quote :

"Merrick was a very good tutor and I honestly think I might have hated this subject if it was not for him! He was very passionate and made tutorials fun!"
